Though ranching’s contribution to Wyoming’s overall economy has declined in recent years (thanks to the booming mineral extraction industry, seconded by the state’s tourist industry), ranching continues to provide both a source of income and a way of living for many of the state’s inhabitants. Ten Sleep, where I live, is surrounded by ranchers of both types — sheep and cattle — groups historically at odds with one another, as evidenced by the Spring Creek Raid, an event commemorated by a roadside marker nearby.
